The Vernissage.ca Charter
A Framework for the Canadian Visual Art Registry
Established 2026
This Charter defines the principles governing participation in the Vernissage.ca registry. It is a statement of curatorial intent and administrative stewardship, establishing the terms under which institutions are represented within a sovereign Canadian digital landscape.
I. On Selection
Admission by Invitation
Vernissage.ca operates by invitation. Inclusion is determined through curatorial judgment based on cultural significance, institutional standing, and contribution to the Canadian visual arts landscape.
The registry expands deliberately, prioritizing long-term cultural value over scale. Invitation functions as both a curatorial act and a verification process, supporting the integrity of all participating institutions.
II. On National Heritage
A Canadian Cultural Framework
Vernissage.ca exists within a Canadian cultural and legal context. All registry data and technical infrastructure are maintained within Canada and governed by Canadian law and privacy standards. No foreign entity is granted jurisdiction over registry data or institutional records.
The platform operates as a sovereign Canadian cultural reference.
III. On Shared Responsibility
Security as Stewardship
The integrity of the registry is a shared commitment. Vernissage.ca maintains technical safeguards and oversight consistent with archival and cultural standards. Participating institutions are responsible for secure credential management and internal accountability.
Security is treated as an ongoing practice of stewardship rather than a transactional service.
IV. On Commercial Silence
The Absence of Noise
Vernissage.ca is not an open advertising platform. Commercial presence is intentionally limited and introduced with care, in support of cultural discovery rather than promotional volume.
- The RegistryThe Registry exists in deliberate commercial silence, maintained as a protected cultural reference. It does not display third-party advertising, sponsored listings, or paid enhancements. Institutional inclusion or visibility within the Registry cannot be purchased or influenced through financial contribution.
- Selective Commercial PresenceIn areas outside the Registry, limited commercial material may appear following administrative review. Participation is not automatic and is not guaranteed by payment. Decisions regarding acceptance, placement, duration, and presentation are guided by relevance, context, and alignment with the platform's cultural focus.
- No Algorithmic PromotionVernissage.ca does not rely on engagement-driven algorithms, bidding systems, or automated ranking to determine visibility. There are no feeds to game and no metrics to optimize. All visibility—editorial or commercial—is governed by curatorial and administrative judgment.
- Respect for AttentionThe platform's visual and editorial environment is designed to honor the art it presents. Commercial elements, when present, are clearly identified and restrained, allowing art and programming to remain central.
V. On Legacy
Curated Continuity
The registry is designed for permanence. Institutional participation reflects inclusion in a maintained national record, stewarded through curatorial oversight rather than market cycles or trend-driven models.
VI. On Intentional Visibility
Institutional Sustainability
Vernissage.ca may offer structured visibility options exclusively to institutions already included in the registry, in support of platform sustainability. Visibility is achieved through placement hierarchy within a unified visual system — without banners, pop-ups, or promotional amplification.
Intentional visibility does not determine eligibility for inclusion, nor does it alter the registry's editorial tone. This model supports platform operations without reliance on third-party advertising networks or extractive data practices. Institutional autonomy and reputational standards remain unaffected.
Eligibility is strictly limited to invited Canadian cultural institutions already participating in the registry. Unrelated commercial advertising is not accepted.
